TrackClip pro by Dieg777

TIRCLIP UPDATE

This is an update to my initial review found here

I have warmed to the trackclip with use. I have lowered the sensitivity to make it smoother for me and the latest driver set is very good and accurate. I find it centres better than just using the Vector clip but others have noticed that the vector clip tracking has also improved with the latest driver set. I know I don’t have to hit the centre button very often now.
The other successful trial was with reflections. Global warming isn’t a myth as the sun shone in Scotland in January and I was able to test it under real conditions and I have to say that the clip was a major improvement over the vector clip. My game ran fine using the clip, whereas it jumped with the vector clip, when the sun shone on a picture behind me causing reflection.
The wires do still annoy me sometimes but only when I get settled down for a session, once in use then I don’t notice them.

I have asked for feedback from other users and my sincere thanks go to all those on the UBI and SIMHQ forums for taking the time to reply. I have copied these below in full so that others may benefit from a range of views, although the majority are favourable.

In summing up I think that most will find an improvement when using the clip , but others are happy to stick with the vector. I don’t think it’s a lot of money and if you are plagued by reflections or poor tracking then I would recommend it. I would still like to see a wireless version though.

Performance wise, I think the clip has the edge over all of the other TrackIR methods used to date - reflective sticky stuff, hat, weird coat hangar cap clip, etc.

The tracking is much more stable, much more precise and centering is rock solid. Also, I'm not constantly fiddling to make sure that I get tracking over 'both shoulders'. With the 'coat hangar' I was forever losing it at about 3/4 o'clock when I turned right to check six and having to shift my chair position, twist my hat and adjust the unit to get it back.

It's very light, so you don't feel it as an encumbrance on your headset, but it does intrude into your peripheral vision a little - to begin I found this a little distracting, but don't really notice it now.

Re the extra wiring - well, I have used the little velcro strap to lash it to the headset cable and don't find this a major issue at all.

It looks and feels a little flimsy, perhaps. But then again, it's a sophisticated bit of electronic kit. Look after it!

I love it, and having ordered it separately I have both the Vector/Hat and the Clip. The Clip is far superior in just the tracking ability alone, I have yet to lose track with the Clip, the Vector/Hat combo is nice for using my 5.1s when the wife isn't in the PC room playing on hers (or I just say Phfft! and run my speakers) I do lose the tracking once in awhile no matter how much I have adjusted the Tracker unit or the settings.

I pretty much agree with Padser assessment 100%

The trackclip pro is FAR better. Money well spent

I was using TR4 Pro with the hat and I was always having to hit the center key after doing some fast tail checks in 6 DOF BOB2. Problem disappeared with the Trackclip Pro. I thought it was merely a convenience for those who hated the hat until I discovered this advantage.

I had a hiccup with my TR4 Trackclip rig yesterday and I was crestfallen---I am so used to the fantastic device that using Flight Sims without it was completely uninteresting. Fortunately, all I needed to do was get the USB plug mounted correctly!

The best piece of technology I bought last year....that pretty much sums up the trackclip pro and TIR 4 for me.

You know what they ought to do is integrate the Track clip into a Medium-to-High quality USB Headset. That way, there would only need to be one cord.

I've been using the hat and vector clip for over a year with my tir4 without any issues...other than my fiancee complaining about my dirty old tir hat! For those of you using the pro clip why not just zip tie the cords to your headset cord? Place a few small black zips every 6 inches or so and they should stay nicely bundled together.

I own the ClipPro and thoroughly enjoy it.

Pros: No hat, I don't have to worry about lighting, light weight (I don't even know I have it attached), extremely accurate.

Cons: The added wire and USB connection. Sometimes I get my left hand (throttle) tangled up in my headset wire in conjunction with the TrackClipPro wire. I have to figure out a better system to integrate the two.

I am a new user to TrackIR and it took me a week or two to get used to it, but once I finally received the ClipPro I am hooked for life using TrackIR.

I have the clip (was a Christmas present) and like it. I "solved" the extra cord problem by winding it around the headset cord so it seems like it is still one cord albeit a bit thicker than before. ;-)

What Sensei said above.

Also, I did as instructed in the enclosed handout, I repositioned the IR Tracker to the left of the monitor and also lowered it...so it is directly in front of the Clip. Its a very nice addition if you already have all the "other" bells and whistles that we all have.

Oh, and I got to try out 6DOF in FS9 and FSX....OUTSTANDING! The implementation in those two Sims is just astonishing. You can look under the cockpit seats for your dropped pen.

I do the same with the cord but I use little zip ties to make it more permanent. I wish they could have left open the option to make it battery operated though. That way the people who whine about batteries would have the cable and us cable whiners would have batteries. Just an idea. Typically I don't use USB headsets and I plan on replacing the one I have now. I play from a mini simpit so getting all the wires where they need to go can be a pain.

I recommend the Trackclip. No issues installing the device or getting it to work. Uninstalled the old TIR software, loaded the latest drivers. Plugged everything in, checked Trackclip and trueview and all worked straight away.

My overall impressions, I haven't noticed any boost in FPS or smoother tracking. So I wouldn't consider it as an upgrade. However the unit is a lot more user friendly than the hat I was wearing before. I have it mounted on a set of Medusa surround Headphones and can't imagine that it wouldn't fit on any other make of phones.
I have my TIR unit running through the USB pass through that is on the end of the TrackClip wire, but if I had USB headphones I would put the phones through the TrackClip instead, to keep my cabling in good order.

All in all for less than £20 from E-Dimensional it was money well spent. If only for the convenience of not wearing a hat or that annoyingly springy vector clip

I appreciated the honesty of your review. As a recent TIR4 buyer I have been considering the Trackclip - especially since it would stop my wife from laughing at me <g>, not to mention how uncomfortable wearing a hat is for me. I like your suggestion of merely attaching the hat device to a headset as a way of getting around the extra cabling (which doesn't sound good to me). Not sure that will help stop the laughs from the hallway though <g>.

Based on the reviewers suggestion I have simply taped my vector clip (or whatever it's called) to the top of my headset and it works like a charm. Can't beat the price either!

I don't have the track clip but I do have TIR4 pro with the regular VE metal clip that mounts to a ball cap.

At times in the past I found it jittery or not tracking too consistently but ever since the latest TIR driver version 4.1030 there is to me a VERY significant improvement in tracking. I had been considering the track clip pro before due to these issues but the improvement with the 4.1030 drivers is so significant I feel there is no need for me to now.

I'm also a little leery of some of the lukewarm or even negative feedback about the new Track Clip from some in the community who's perspectives I trust.

Righto, First off let me make it clear that I am rather useless with computers and did not get a trackIR for a very long time as it always seemed so complicated.

Anyway, wife bought one for my birthday a few weeks ago and I was using the hat. Having two small kids in the house I always wear headphones (big thumbs up for Medusa 5.1's) and it was a pain using the hat as I forgot to put it in before the headphones. Easy solution was the clip. Easy to use, install etc, did not even have to reinstall software as some have.

Once I realised I had to check the 'clip' box in profiles everything was fine.

It works a treat for me, all I had to do was move the actual unit slightly to left of centre.

Personally, wearing a hat in the house just to play a game seems a bit odd to me and using the clip has made no difference to actual game play at all.
I suppose I am trying to say for me, I see no negatives, only positives from using the clip.
