TrackIR 4 Review by Dieg777

INTRODUCTION

I have decided to update my initial review, following feedback from other users and to highlight the additional features that I have experienced since the first review. This review replaces the initial one.

I upgraded from TIR3 and you can see my reviews of Track IR 3 here,  and the Vector Expansion here

I also have to point out again, in the interests of fairness, that I was sent the TrackIR4 for review, so I didn’t spend my own, hard earned, cash on the upgrade.

If you are completely new to this device then the obvious question is what is Trackir?

Trackir is a device that allows you to replace the mouse or hat switch that you commonly use to move the view in your games.

It replaces these by using a camera type device to track reflectors on your head and uses this information to move the game views, thus giving a more natural and realistic method of controlling views in your game.

You move your head left and the view moves left, move your head up and the view looks up etc

It uses software to exaggerate small head movements into larger camera movements, as obviously you need to be looking forward at the screen to see the effect of your movement.

The next question would be to ask is would this suit you or how much of a benefit would this be?

I have always been enthusiastic about this product, and I think its great, but to balance my views I sought feedback from other users and the overwhelming majority of reviews and feedback is very positive about this device. It even won the SIMHQ Technology - Best Commercial Release award for 2005 voted by staff and readers. However I would say that you would find a benefit primarily if you fly using the cockpit. If you use externals or no cockpit icon type views a lot then you wont see as much benefit. Those that use padlock views a lot will also not benefit as much.

Here are some typical comments from users hopefully covering each viewpoint:

Blackduck wrote

I believe most people will enjoy using a TrackIR but those who gain the most benefit are the people who have difficulty mastering other methods of viewing. If I use a track hat I cant keep anything in view, if I use padlocks I get disoriented very quickly. I am too uncoordinated to maintain spatial awareness of a virtual world by using other devices. Instead of using my hands to change view I can now use my head- it feels far more natural to me.

I found the TrackIR instantly usable- I instinctively maintain orientation while looking around. I very soon went from being a player for whom the cockpit view was a novelty to a player who PREFERRED to have the cockpit on as it helped with orientation! The extra immersion was a welcome bonus and I even started looking at the gauges.
If you have no problem looking around using hat switches etc then you will not notice as big an improvement as I did. My brain is too old and I am too stupid to learn/master new tricks-

I recently purchased TIR4 (have never owned TIR before), and with a bit of practice can now take on and usually master offline play with cockpit on. The device installed and works like a dream, very smooth in operation.

The one caveat I have is that because I made the 'mistake' of starting to fly online with the 'wonderwoman' style, and tend to fly in open-pit dogfight servers, use of TIR can be for me disorientating to say the least. This is in no way a reflection of the device; it is purely down to me. However, I think it is possible that other 'less serious' flyers like myself might find this to be the case.

To sum up, the device works as advertised, and does it very well indeed. I have nothing but praise for it and it's software. How the user applies it to the game is another matter. If you are adept at using a mouse, or keys or hat-switch to look around (I am not!), then for use mainly in open-pit servers you might find the expense unjustified. For closed-pit servers, or for playing offline campaigns, it is fantastic, as I find offline to be a less frenetic experience.

As for my deficiencies, and me I must learn to fly online with cockpit ON to get the most out of TIR4, because as far as I can see, I am the limiting factor! I shall continue to refine my profiles, practice more and eventually get onto closed-pit servers.sou

I just got my Track IR 4 a few days ago and I have to say I don't really feel it's worth the money. It's more like a neat little toy or a gimmick than a really useful tool, in my opinion. I find that I prefer using padlock when in the cockpit and disabling TrackIR and using mouse look with external views

Here are some other reviews

http://www.darts-page.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=15

I will cover how it compares to older TrackIR devices later for those considering upgrading.

Ok you decide on the balance of the reviews that you want one -so what do you get for your cash? In the box, you get the brand new design of instrument, a hat, a vector expansion clip, a driver install disc and a quick start guide.

Here is a view of my setup:

A side to side comparison to the old device looks like this-
what it doesn’t show is how slim the new device is –only a few mm.

The clip that holds the reflectors fits to the supplied hat like this.

In the picture you can see the difference between the vector expansion clip and the reflective dots used on older models to track your movement. The vector expansion greatly increases accuracy.

This shows the old style vector clip, the newer version looks like this

It is more curved than the old one and the base trackers are on a new stand which keeps the reflectors at right angles to the unit to aid tracking. In truth I used both versions and could not tell any significant difference but others have noticed an improvement in tracking with the new style.

SOFTWARE Installation AND GETTING STARTED

One thing to note is that you cannot use older TrackIR software and drivers if you have this; you have to uninstall all old TrackIR products and then install the new drivers and software. There are newer drivers on the web site, so I would recommend that after installation and testing that you download and use these.

Another important thing to highlight is to keep your old profiles if you have these. The TIR4 can use these, so if you have spent ages setting up your old TIR then you can save this and import it into your profiles folder in your new install and you are able to use these, which might save you some time.

Installation was no problem – The quick start guide logically helped me through the simple procedure.

It is important to follow the install procedure.

Load the software first then install the device into a spare USB port and site the camera properly.

It sits on top of your monitor, or shelf, facing you. It is very important to site this correctly. See the manual for details or here is some good advice from jetbuff –

You need to place it at least 60cm from your head, i.e. 2 feet. Any closer and you simply won't have the desired FoV/range of motion available. Think 30° tracking angle (~ 40° for the TrackIR 4) and expand it outwards from the device and you'll understand just how important sitting far back from the device really is.

When you plug the device in you will get the hardware-detected message. Click install automatically. You might get a  “Hardware Driver Install Warning message”, accept this and after you get the hardware installed successfully message restart computer and you should be ok.

When you restart you should see the new TIR icon on your desktop. Click this to open up the software program.

I wont go into all aspects of the software as this is covered in the manual on the CD but the main things to note are the View tab which will allow you to access other displays that help you set up the system and most important is the profiles tab.

Profiles are how you set up the device to control the way that the views in your game respond to your head movement. The new software comes with a set of profiles ready for use. There are more games supported and there are many more flight sim profiles available for use than previously. All these profiles are configurable so you can adjust the movement to suit your individual tastes.

Since my first review I have been in contact with CharveL and as a result he has written the following excellent guide to setting up the TIR. I recommend that you read and follow his instructions here.

Getting the right profile for you is critical to enjoying the full benefits of this device so it is worthwhile spending time now to set it up.

Use

Ok this is easy, I've done this before, launch Trackir program, select one of the new Il2 FB profiles………Combat Flight ..that will do; launch game and run a Quick mission.

This is going to be so good…..better than the TIR3 …….. can hardly wait……….press fly……and……………….WTF this aint right. Its jerky, it doesn’t work like my TIR3, this SUCKS. Try another profile, nope and another, NOPE. What’s wrong?

Well, really, nothing. I had been too quick and eager to use it that I hadn’t spent time in positioning the device correctly, I hadn’t set up my joystick to use the hot keys and most importantly I couldn’t settle with any of the new profiles.  I was so used to flying with my old profile that everything felt wrong. Like putting on a glove and finding 2 fingers in one of the slots and none in the other. I just couldn’t get comfortable.

The solution was to find and reload my old profile and use this. Instant success. BTW I use CharveL s profile.  After this I was back in the flow.

It is important to try to relax and make natural movements- don’t turn into some Frankenstein monster bolt upright in your chair. Or think like

I –must-move-view-so-I-will-move head-now.

Relax and let it flow, it takes time but its worth it in the end.

Here are some of my observations comparing TIR4 to TIR3 +VE

IL2FB.

NOTE-IL2 FB series does not support the full 6 Degrees Of Freedom or movement; it only supports 2 DOF e.g. the same range of movements as covered by hat switches.

In other words it can

  • Rotate around Pitch  (pan up and down)

  • Rotate around Yaw.  (Pan left and right)

I will cover the full 6DOF in the BOB WOV 2 section below.

The things I immediately noticed was that the centring was much better. I did not have to hit the hot key to centre as often, this really helps. The tracking and pan are very smooth and the difference in head movement from rotating to back left and then to left back up is very small

With TIR 4 I have never lost tracking at the edge of movement, this sometimes occurred with TIR 3.

And there is a bonus, I have found that I can turn off V- SYNC with this model and although I still get a little tearing it is manageable and there is no limiter on my FPS.

In TIR3 I had to use V-SYNC.  Of course this is a personal preference. I am willing to trade off Image Quality for Frames Per Second on line, to gain every advantage I can get. Off Line I have v-sync on to preserve Image Quality.

BOB II WOV

I was really looking forward to trying this sim as it supports the full 6DOF. But I had trouble settling into the sim. I was so used to playing il2fb that it was not comfortable until I had spent a lot of time setting up my joystick profiles and getting a TIR profile to work for me- fortunately CharveL helped and I am now enjoying this sim.

The added axis are

  • Rotation around Roll (lean left and right)

  • move left and right

  • move up and down

  • move forward and back

These are very easy to use and helpful in all aspects from taxying to firing.  Although initially very disorientating due to having too sensitive a profile, especially the tilt axis, once my profile was sorted everything worked smoothly. I can now lean and tilt with total control. I especially like the control of zooming in by leaning forward, this gives much better control over the standard, wide-normal-zoom views. The only problem I had was loss of tracking when I moved my head forward to zoom in but this was easily remedied by moving the device slightly further away. In addition tracking the bandit is easier now as you can lean round cockpit struts to keep tabs on him so situational awareness is enhanced.

I don’t feel that I have had the chance to explore the full potential of the game or of the 6DOF but what I have seen leads me to believe that 6DOF is a major benefit and should be implemented in all future Sims.

Is it worthwhile upgrading and how does it compare to other devices?

Differences from PREVIOUS MODELS

The differences, taken from the manufacturer’s site, are here

If I compare TIR4 to my TIR3 and VE I would say it is definatly better in all areas but I couldn’t justify the outlay to upgrade as my TIR3 + VE was relatively new and worked well in its own right.

Here are some other users opinions on older Track IRs –

JG52-6High

I went from TrackIR 1 to 4 2 weeks ago....unbelievable!
Really worth the upgrade, I was a little sceptical Wink
Centering, smoothness, tracking, has all improved ALOT!

I recently changed from TIR1 to TIR4 so I have no idea how the 2, 3 or 3 Pro performed.¨

Besides the 6DOF feature, of course TIR4 is better. It is much easier to set up in a proper way, it is smoother, faster and you loose "center" very rarely. However, I have to say that if you setup a TIR1 correctly, the TIR1 is in no way "BAD". Unless you really need 6DOF (if you only play IL2), there is really no need to upgrade from 1 to 4 considering the price.

I used my TIR1 for nearly 3 years before I got the 4 versions, and obviously had a lot of time to experiment with it. To have a nice setup I suggest that you use the 2.11 version of the software. I have always found that when I used later version the TIR1 performed worse. Also, forget about the small dots, using them only gives you a headache, they are way too small. Better is to buy a reflective tape and cut out "dots" with a diameter of 1-1,5 cm.

The more you use a TIR device the more sensitive you want it. When you start using it, it is a good thing to really move your head otherwise you will soon loose control or maybe get seasick. But by slowly increasing the sensitivity you will get the hang of using a TIR device. You will "unlearn" all unnecessary head movements that you might have been doing before. TIR1 works better with less head movements.

Last, you have to assign a key, preferably on the Joystick, where you center the TIR device. Quite often, especially when you have high sensitivity, you need to re-center, but with a key close by, this will get to be 2nd nature, and you will not even think of it.

So if you are happy with your TIR1 and you only play games with 2DOF then I can't really see why you can't stick with it. Yes the 4 IS better in all aspects, but it is also at a high price.

I haven't tried the 3 Pro but I gather that there REALLY is no need to buy the TIR4 if you have this one...

OTHER TRACKING DEVICES

I have asked for feedback on other devices but experience is limited. This is the only feedback I could find.

pterodactyl77 in this thread

I use a pretty expensive camera Creative Ultra WebCam, USD $99 for cam2pan (only $10, not $20 as listed). I honestly don't get very good results. I use the camera for other purposes (corresponding w/ family across the country), so the webcam, while expensive, is worth it for that-- but for cam2pan-- I'm a bit disappointed and somewhat wished the $10 had gone towards a trackIR.

The plus about cam2pan is that you don't have to wear a hat or stickers, etc. that's nice. The minus about it is that it doesn't track very well, as far as I am able to figure it out. Perhaps I’m just incompetent-- but either way-- it is not trivial to get smooth operation. The explanations in their help / support are not clear as well.

As you probably read, supposedly the cheaper cameras work... you might consider e-mailing the developer, support@mousevision.com to get some direct recommendations.

All in all - I haven't found my flying to be much improved w/ cam2pan. But, again, perhaps I just haven't figured out how to make it work right.... I have heard that flashlight-tracking mode works best-- but that's more or less wearing a flashlight on your head...and cam2pan was supposed to be sticker/cap free...

Waldo.pepper in answer to a query-

I know you are looking for track IR. Cam2pan works, I have even talked to the developer myself and done some very limited testing - but there is no real substitute for TrackIR. I have a lowly Track IR 2 and it is superb.

An old thread

Summary

This is a fantastic product.  It just keeps getting better.

PROS

  • Sexy slim design.

  • Would fit onto a TFT or laptop better than TIR3

  • Improved response time

  • Improved field of view

  • Very good support from manufacturers

  • Free 30 Day trial

CONS

Stem linking unit to stand looks a little flimsy but only time would tell if this is a problem

Increased cost over TIR3-Might be a bit galling to see a new model if you bought a new TIR3 recently, but then the same happens with other computer equipment like graphics cards

Is it worth it?

If you don’t have an existing TIR3 + VE then YES !!!!

If you don’t believe me look at the numerous threads on UBIs forum or SIMHQ forums. Every time anyone asks about these devices the positive recommendations come in. I repeat what I said in my initial review. I think it is more important than a fancy graphics card, joystick, and soundcard. In my opinion it is the number one device that adds immersion and enjoyment to flight sims. My only restriction would be if you use padlock or external views extensively and are not willing to adjust to this method of viewing, then I would not recommend this for you

If you do have an existing TIR3 or TIR3 +VE then I would say that it would appeal more to those people who really must have the best and to those who play a lot, especially online. I was more than happy with my TIR3+VE and wouldn’t have spent the money upgrading but then I get guilty about providing food for my kids and wife………. sometimes.
