Try to keep images small, less than 150kb if possible.

Some notes on image size/features/formats that are "visible" in webbrowsers:

GIF (Graphics Interchange Format)

Use for screenies of window's menu's etc or when full opacity or animation is needed.
upto 256 colours
Opacity possible, but only 0 or 100%
Animated images possible
Very small file size

JPG (Joint Picture Group)

Use for in-game screenshots etc where there are more than 256 colours without a need for opacity
No animation possible.

PNG (Portable Network Graphics)

Use for 256+ colour images without the need for animation but with the need for opacity.

8-bit opacity possible (alpha channel)
No animation possible.

A bit bigger file-size than JPG but higher quality end-product

All these will loose some quality in the end-product because they don't use a loss-less compression algorithm

BMP (windows' - OS/2 Bitmap)

No opacity possible.
No animation possible.
Loss-less format.
Big file size.
