Trouble installing V1.8.5

When I try to install it over v1.7.? the installer launches and does 3 program installs and shuts down. No error, no nothing.
So, I removed v1.7.? and tried again. Same thing.
V1.7.? seemed to uninstall ok. Might there be something left in the registry from a prior crash of the system that needed a system restroe?

Are you saying you can not install 1.8.5?

There should be no problem installing over an older install, in fact that's the best method. The install does look in the registry to check the install location.
