Suport for "Windows/Start" key?

Postby RAF_OldBuzzard on Fri Aug 26, 2005 5:44 pm

Would it be possible to add support for using the WINDOWS/START keys as the PTD key?

I used to use the CTRL key for my PTT key in TeamSpeak, but since so many of the various flight sims use the CTRL key for various commands, I found that anytime I issued a command that used the CTRL key, that it would also toggle TeamSpeak, and you would hear the click as it opened and closed.

I found an application that makes a registry change that disables the WINDOWS/START key, and found that I could now use that for TeamSpeak, and get rid of the annoying 'pops'.

It sure would be nice to be able to use that key for the PTD for VAC, as I sometimes issue commands to VAC as I use TeamSpeak, and that sometimes gets me into 'deep doodoo' in IL2

Hi,

Yes, I could add the left/right menu keys to the list. The reason I never added these keys before was they would execute the "Start" button within a game. Your post got me thinking that I can add a exculsive switch to each key press assignment, meaning it would only be recognised by VAC and not the Windows OS or it could be switched to pass through and be recognised by Windows. Then you wouldn't have to edit your registry.

How would that be?

Hi RAF_OldBuzzard,

I thought I'd give you an update. I looked at the registry tweak possiblity, but decided against it as it would require a re-boot. It's a pretty neat tweak though. :) I thought that tweak would disable the key to all programs, but it didn't. Anyway, I added the left/right Windows key (start button) , left/right Alt key and the Menu key. I also added a switch to make the key press exclusive to VAC, which will do what the registry tweak did.

I'm working on a text import for new profiles, after that I should have the web site updated with the new version. :)

No joy

Running into problems. Installed 1.7.2 but still can't get it to work.

With my L-WIN key disabled I can assign it to TS, and TS will activate when I press it. However VAC doesn't recognize the L-WIN key when it's in that state, so I'm still where I was in 1.7.0

I tested using my R-WIN key, and found that VAC would recognize it, and the PTD option worked, and the 'exclusive box' worked as well. However, with the exclusive box checked, TS can't 'see' the key for transmitting purposes.

I tried to get 'sneaky' and use the L-WIN instead of the L-CTL for commands in IL2, but IL2 doesnt recognice the L/R-WIN keys

This is the registry 'tweak' that I'm using that disables the L-WIN key:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Keyboard Layout]
"Scancode Map"=hex:00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,02,00,00,00,00,00,5B,E0,00,00,00,00

I just testing the registry tweak you use for disabling the L-WIN key and you are right, VAC does not see the key press with that tweak in the registry. When I first looked at this I thought VAC could see the key press, I was wrong.

I tried a different method to scan the keyboard, but I still unable to see the key press with the scan tweak in the registry. I’m looking at other possibilities, but the outcome doesn’t look good at the moment.

You can try a different key to disable VAC and enable TS, I use the middle mouse button with Ventrilo and VAC. I also assign the middle mouse button to one of my joystick buttons so my hand never leaves the joystick when using the two programs.

Sorry about that,

I wonder it the TeamSpeak folks might be able to shed some light on this?

TS does 'see' that key with that registry tweak, so we know that it's possible.

VAC uses the virtual scan keys to hook the keyboard which is what that tweak effects. I’m guessing TS uses an alternate method for hooking into the keyboard which doesn’t use the virtual scan.

I would have to use a different method to examine the keyboard to by-pass the virtual keyboard tweak you use.
