Error 1402

Postby Sammie22 on Mon Jan 30, 2006 1:42 am

I am trying to install this on my 'game' rig, and am getting an error. I have tried the XML update I found in another support thread in this forum, but still get the same error. Any ideas?

Thanks

Hi Sammie,

Thanks for your interest in VAC. I did a google search on the error you are getting and it looks like it's the permissions on the registry key is set to not allow writes.

Here's a link that shows a fix for an office program:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.as ... =262861&SD

Here's a link for a fix for a Norton's program:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/ns ... #_Section1

Follow the instructions from one of the links using the registry key \richtext.richtextctrl.1\clsid

Of course I'm assuming you are installing VAC on a Windows XP system on an account that will allow you to install programs. In any case the the permissions in the registry needs to be corrected before VAC will install.

Hope that helps,

I actually did that before I posted here, and there wasn't a 'richtext' in the registry. I will try this again and see if I can find it. And yes, this is on XP. It's basically the same setup as the pc I originally installed this on, which worked fine. Only diff is I have disabled more services on my gamer rig.

Thanks for the reply. I will post back after I have researched this a bit more.

Hi Sammie,

I think you could create a new account and using that newly created account without disabling any services you might be able to do the install. It's only a guess on my part.

Not necessary.. I found the problem. I was starting my registry search from within the registry directories, rather than starting at the top level. After searching for 'richtext.richtextctrl.1' I was able to locate a few instances. I modified the permissions on 'richtext.richtextctrl.1' on every instance I found which contained a 'clsid', per the windows office support page (which you linked above), and then propogated those permissions to all child objects/keys (this includes the clsid).

VAC then installed fine.

Thanks for the assist,
Sammie
