Really want to complete a mission :(

Postby DieterGoetz on Sat Oct 28, 2006 8:37 pm

I cant complete one single mission on the aces expansion of il2 because it keeps crashing to desktop. I have all versions of the game except pacific fighters and they all do the same thing. I have played the game with no sound, and it worked fine until I got into combat. I cannot figure out what it is the game wants me to do!!

Is there a way of finding out what specifically causes the game to crash?

This had been going on for ages now, and is really getting me ****** off...

Please tell us some details about your system, does the problem occur with any other games?

Posting a DxDiag will also help.

Overheating may be the problem, open up the case and check that fans are clear of dust, clear any dust with a can of compressed air.

Are all the vents clear of obstructions, ie curtains?
Is there plenty of spavce around the PC for adequate ventillation?

Really want to complete a mission :(

Postby DieterGoetz on Sun Oct 29, 2006 2:09 pm

OK - Here's the report, if you need any more details - just ask... I appreciate the help with this, it's 'doing my nut'! :smt076

I had lots of problems with overheating in the past - it's not that - i'm pretty much an expert on overheating now(!)... CPU temp is always nominal after a crash.

I did install new drivers for video and sound cards. The new soundblaster driver I installed kept doing funny things to my system (whenever the sys booted the sound card would make a nasty sound when it was initialised, etc...) and the soundblaster site basically said 'if it aint broke, dont fix it' - so I rolled the driver back to the microsoft one.

Not sure about BIOS and CPU driver updates though. Never done em, little afraid of them to be honest.

Crashes seem to happen whenever there are enemy aircraft and heavy gunfire coming along.

I think your graphics card maybe a little underpowered for this game.

What sort of resolution and settings do you run in the game?

Goto hardware settings and lower your soundcards acceleration.

Did you check the graphics card fan is clear of dust?

OK. After dubbing myself the king of overheat - I just checked out my graphics card as you suggested. It was caked in dust. It has been cleaned. I cannot check whether it makes a difference at the moment but I will let you know... Thanks for your help - I may be back ;)

Still no go

Postby DieterGoetz on Mon Oct 30, 2006 6:39 pm

OK - I was all fired up cos I thought cleaning the card would solve the problems, but no - I flew for ages on the first mission then got into a fight - it did pretty much the same thing. Only got to fire off a few rounds this time. :(

the graphics settings are on: Full Screen 1024x768 32 bit Stencil Buffer.
There isnt even a set up option for my Ti200 card (which makes me think uh-oh)... I'll try it again on safe directx settings (although I think I already have)...

Sound options on custom 16 channel, default speakers, default engine, 44.1k sampling.

Could you tell what exactly happens with regard to the "crash" ?
- do you get the BSOD (Blue Screen Of Death), does it give any warning or error message or crash to desktop? - did you update the VIA 4 in 1 drivers? (here's a link to the VIA drivers - worth a try). There are several possible problem areas - CPU, graphics, sound and memory amount are all on the lower end of the spectrum for FB. It should be able to run as long as you don't expect too much like EAX or "Perfect" landscape. BoB:WoV is not a good compare candidate to FB. It does not nearly demand as much of hardware as FB does.
exactly what version is reported lower-left onscreen when you start the game?

Better select OpenGL instead of DirectX to run FB. The DirectX interface for FB is just a "wrapper" which means the CPU will take a bigger hit without getting better graphics performance if you select DirectX.
Also try "No Hardware Acceleration" under the Sound Tab when you run il2setup.exe in the main game directory. I know it sounds weird, but it may very well give better results than selecting the "SB Live!" there...
When testing try to run a simple track. This does not demand as much from your system as flying around yourself. Also shut down background programs that are not needed. Setting a big static swap file (minimum and maximum virtual memory both set to 3000MByte) might also help.

Hope this helps;

Good Luck!

Thanks MaxMhz.

It has got to the stage now where it just crashes clean to desktop - one minute you're playing the game, the next you're looking at desktop. No blue screen, no warning.

If i select OpenGL the game runs extremly slowly, very slow refresh, the game even crashes from the first menu screen and takes ages to load, thats why I stuck it in Directx, there doesnt seem to be a problem in that mode.

I dont understand that my system is too slow?! According to the game boxes, My sys is well within limits (I'm guessing those stated are minimum rather than recommended, but still)! Did the updates up the ante?

There is one other thing: I reformatted my computer recently to start afresh. I reinstalled the original MSI drivers for the video card, and then installed the Nvidia driver over that without uninstalling the othe first. I have the Nvidia control panel installed with the icon on my sys tray. When I right click to properties for display however, I still get MSI clock and MSI information pages in the dialogue. Is this normal? Are the MSI pages part of the Nvidia pack? I have uninstalled and reinstalled the card, but the MSI pages still come up. Is driver conflict possible?

I also ran the game on the lowest res (640x480, 16 bit) and it did exactly the same thing. Although it let me get a little closer to the enemy. This was with video settings on safe directx settings and minimal (resource safe) Directx soundcard settings. This was all with a system managed pagefile.

V2.04 is the game version.

AAAAAAAAAARRRRRGGHH!!

I'll try your setup options and let you know...

Unistall all of the video drivers and just install the Nivda ones. What version of the drivers are you using by the way?

As Max has said, OpenGL is the way forward with this title. So your perfromance issues with it and not with DirectX (apart of course the crash) is very surprising.

Power supply - what watt ratting PSU do you have? I am assuming that you can play other games for a good length of time without this issue.

As I side comment about BoB WOV - water being black is probably the ack of shader support on the card you have.

OK. I think it would be a very good idea to uninstall the MSI video drivers completely before installing the NVidea Forceware drivers. I suspect some parts of the MSI driver are still active if you get MSI software and not the standard nVidea display settings when right-clicking the nVidea symbol on the taskbar or rightclicking empty spece on the desktop and selecting Properties etc. I'm am,azed DX works faster than OGL on your system and can't realy explain that (could be a driver conflict between nvidea - MSI)

I'm using /Your Uninstaller! 2006 Pro myself to uninstall anything these days; It has a time limited (21 days) free version, see the link. It not only removes the installed program/driver but also cleans any trace on disk or in the registry and works a lot better than the standard way(s) of uninstalling IMHO
Allways run il2setup after changes to drivers and before running FB.
Opinions about what should be the minimum system specs will differ widely according to who you ask, but a P3 + nV Ti 200 like you describe should (just) be able to play it on the lower settings. Nothing fancy, but it should work and not crash. Check the main game directory if it has an error log after crashing. If so, please copy it into a reply here...

Thanks guys, still appreciating the help. Still hating my machine.

Oesau - Nvidia driver version 9.1.4.7 from 11/08/2006.

I'm not sure about my PSU rating (how could I found out?), I had seen that suggested to somebody elsewhere with a similar problem, with a link to a calc. But yes, I play battlefield, medal of honour etc for hours on end with no problems.

And Max, I will try the link you posted for an uninstall, see if it eliminates the extra properties windows.

Also, I have had a look in the game folder and there are a number of logs with names in this format: 'hs_err_pid****'. They all seem pretty similar, here is an example (seems to be relating exceptions to Java?!):

OK. Getting confused now.

I downloaded and used the uninstaller, but it didn't actually delete all the Nvidia files, I had to do it manually! Plus side, the MSI pages on display properties disappeared. I then reinstalled the Nvidia drivers, and the MSI pages reappeared!! What is the link between MSI multimedia and Nvidia? Is it a subsidiary?? They use the Nvidia logo?

What makes me think these MSI pages are not part of the Nvidia driver pack is that they give the same adjustment options as the Nvidia desktop window (res, colour depth etc). They wouldn't do something twice now would they??

Does the above log shed any light?
