Out of range

Postby wayno77 on Thu Dec 29, 2005 5:50 am

When I try to shut down the computer, the monitor pops out of range and the comp won't shut down. Win98, Sempron 2800+, 512mb PC3200 400mhz RAM, Asus K8V-MX mb, PNY GeForce 6200, NVidia 81.98 drivers.
At least with these drivers I can play FB in OpenGL again.
The out of range used to occur randomly with other drivers, usually when a prog would open explorer.I would hit a key and the desktop would return, but some icons would be missing from the right side toolbar. It looks like a HD reformat and reinstall will be the solution....
Thx

I'm thinking the 6200 is the cause. I'll check out NVidia's forums.... :?

When a monitor goes "out of range it means your video card is sending too much data in too short a time for the monitor to handle.

1)Try reducing the resolution. - if possible try to start in standard VGA pressF8 key on start of windows and select "safe mode"... this it should allways handle OK; If it doesn't the monitor is probably to blame and not the video card. (just saying it's something to check not that it's per-se the monitor...

Since your dxdiag says 1024x768 @70 Hz to be on the sure side check the video cable from video card to the monitor - is it OK, then try another monitor first if you have access to one.)

Also do a Virus check...
don't re-format - that would be a last-resort option.

I did what Nvidia said, and tried a lot of things. The reformat didn't work either. I'm gonna change the cable, throw my other monitor on, see if that works. Computer show once a month around here, so I''ll check there. They had a 21" flat screen CRT for $69.00. I guess it's time to get XP. Kinda bums me out cause I was saving cash for an Athlon64 proc....

I forgot to say that when I hit shutdown, it starts to shut down and then pops out of range and won't turn off. I have to push the switch. No problem on restarts, though....

My apologies for the long delay in answering up! I've been working like 7 days a week or been sick or recovering from surgery.

Yes, it is out of range because your PC is busy elsewhere. The problem is, that with anything older than XP for an operating system, Cousin Billy simply does not support the security updates for your operating system. As a result, I'm sure your PC is a porn server for at least somebody if not more. It is infested and will remain so no matter how many times you reformat as long as you connect to the web in any way or connect to a computer that is connected to the web. Besides, most drivers are updated with XP in mind and yes, with drivers it is less of an issue, but not entirely so.

Get an OEM copy of XP from like http://www.magnum-pc.com or elsewhere and make it Cousin Billy's Homely Edition. I know steve v and others like the Pro version, but I think they are... while not wrong... just less right than they could be on this subject!

When you reformat, do it in NTFS or you will defeat many of the security features gained in XP and you will still be stuck with your current troubles. Make sure you download the latest XP drivers for your needs that are correct for your PC including a chipset update. Remember, the latest driver is not always the greatest driver, so ask smart people (not me man!) which drivers are best for your PC.

Thanks for the reply, Luckyboy. I know what you're saying.
The reason I said the pro ed is cause I've read that you won't be able to upgrade from the home ed. In fact, support for home is scheduled to end 31 Dec 2006, whereas pro is 31 Dec 2011.
None of my scans have found anything.(Well, I shouldn't say anything, mru's and such) I run Disk Cleaner, Spybot, Adaware, HiJack This, Zone Alarm and Secretmaker. Anti-virus is AntiVir Personal Ed. I also check at grc.com now and then.
The problem isn't as bad as it was. The shutdown thing is inconvienent....

Yesterday, playback on WMP9 started in color, then switched over to black and white. Weird. Unistalled it. Same thing on WMP7 so reinstalled 9.... Still happening. Maybe I need to go back to the Gf2 MX400. Nooooooooooo....

The more I read, the more I'm thinking it's a virus wayno... I'd advice to use several (3 or more) adware/spyware removers (each one has its own weaknesses - they all miss something)and a/some full system-wide scans for viruses although if shields up! at grc.com says its all ok, it probably is...
there are several free virus scanners online :) try a

Hope uou didn't use kazaa or emule/ edonkey or something... that would get you infected fairly quickly ;)

Hey, Luckyboy , I hope the surgery wasn't something serious and you're recovery is going fine. I'm just back from hospital myself.(yup - again ) They removed sme of the tip of of my middlefinger (the good hand :( ). It got infected by bacteria. the wound wasn't even visible and I missed it completely  , then 1 week later you allmost loose a complete fingertip, bone and all. d*d diabetes >: luckyly it seems I can keep the bone :) and recovery is going goog also :D - bit of a handicap not being able to use either hand though... good way to meet a nice nurse under the shower too :D

Wayno, when I saw your response, I thought to myself, "Oh well, here's another guy who will just argue the point and never upgrade". I've had so much experience responding to people who can't seem to understand security issues that at that point, I decided to let the issue lay there like the sleeping dog it is. Fortunately for you (because hey, I don't afect my PC!) Max chimed in and supported what I am saying. Let me explain further...

Yes, a few security issues addressed by not only your Windows Security Updates, but antivirus software as well are just theoretical in nature. In other words, the threat is possible on paper, but no known issues have come up and the patch is preventative in nature.

Unfortunately, about 99% of the Service Pack 2 and security updates and antivirus updates are the result of clear and present threats. The funny thing is, that the threats increase by about 1000% AFTER the patch comes out; why? Because most of the sad vandals out there not only don't have a life, they have no imagination and they look at the patches as they come out and that gives them ideas. As a result, anything that there is a patch for is lurking out there in such large volumes, that you WILL encounter it and right away. Compounding this problem is that most of the patches don't prevent an infection, they just disable its' functionality. As a result, even if you connect to only the cleanest of computers, you will get infected. Having a modern operating system is not an option, but a necessity. There is not a snowballs' chance in hell that you will remain clean for more than a couple of online hours without becoming a porn server!

Thanks again for the input. As far as the out of range problem, it seems that it only occurs when I shutdown. The WMP9 playing in b&w is weird cause Nero plays them fine. I'll be digging deeper to find the culprit.
With any luck, I'll have XP by the end of Febuary.

Good luck, Max!

Thanks for the G/L Wayno! it helped! I was back to the surgeon's today for a follow-up and it was so good I'm off the bandage and wearing a normal plaster now :D Still on heavy antibiotics for 5 more weeks but that I don't mind. Got a bit paranoid about bugs though - I hired a cleaning lady and got all kinds of anti-bacterial stuff (no not that kind of C/L! back to fysiotherapy next week

Sounds like you got dragged through half America LB! - oh and remember hands-on is better than books :D

gees do we all have fun with bugs... remembers me of something that might cheer ya up some
