Not necessary.. I found the problem. I was starting my registry search from within the registry directories, rather than starting at the top level. After searching for 'richtext.richtextctrl.1' I was able to locate a few instances. I modified the permissions on 'richtext.richtextctrl.1' on every instance I found which contained a 'clsid', per the windows office support page (which you linked above), and then propogated those permissions to all child objects/keys (this includes the clsid).
VAC then installed fine.
