BOOK REVIEW - THRILLING ACCOUNT FROM A WW2 VETERAN

Postby aloneifly on Tue Apr 10, 2007 3:43 pm

Hi - I would like to tell you briefly about a true story written by my father in law which has received a lot of praise. It is titled Alone I Fly and is available in paperback for £6.99 +p&p.
He served in the RAF (104 squadron) as a bomber pilot in the N Africa campaign. On his first mission he was shot down; all the crew perished and he managed to survive days in the desert awaiting rescue. He tells of this and other hair raising missions and unusual posts in a very exciting yet humorous way. I assure you it is a very good read. But dont take my word for it. Here are some comments from people who have bought the book.

It really was a great read.Lately Ive had 3 or 4 books on the go which I've left unfinished but this one was completed in a few days! HIGHLY reccomended.

This is one of the best WWII aircrew memoirs I have read. Bill has written a very readable account of his life on active service in the RAF. It is both humorous and poignant, but never maudlin.

I must say, the book is great. I think people of all ages and backgrounds would find it an absolutely fabulous read. The book is extremely well written, and written from the heart! I will certainly be recommending it to all my friends and family

More information is available from http://www.aloneifly.com You can buy the book from that site or if you prefer from ebay where it is currently listed -item no is 190101795940

EXCITING NEWS (well for me anyway but I thought I had to share it!)
We sent a copy of Alone I fly to that other Bill Bailey (you know the one from Never Mind the Buzzcocks as well as other things). He actually read and enjoyed it so much he has mentioned it on his website! He says

You may be aware that Bill Bailey has written a book. But it's not the Bill Bailey you're thinking of, nor is it his doppelganger/reflection in a highly-polished cheese counter. The Bill in question is Sergeant Bill Bailey, who flew bombers during World War II, and has recently published Alone I Fly, an account of his experiences.

The sole survivor of a disastrous bombing mission in North Africa, Bill spent days alone in the desert awaiting rescue. Later serving on several other unusual posts, and flying in many more dangerous missions, he managed to survive through his determination and ingenuity.

A vivid and honest account of his truly extraordinary experience, this is a unique and memorable book which deserves to reach a wider audience. But, I hear you ask, is there any reason, besides authorial name, that it should be mentioned here?

Well, yes. Bill read the book himself and loved it, finding it gripping, and a fascinating picture of wartime life, and wanted to use this opportunity to encourage you to check it out. So why not show your continuing, unprejudiced support for Bill Baileys of all varieties by visiting Sgt. Bailey's website, and ordering yourself a copy.

You can see this at http://www.billbailey.co.uk - Latest news.

If that doesnt tell you how good the book is nothing will!!
Still on sale from Ebay or direct from http://www.aloneifly.com
You can buy with confidence from aloneifly and then I dont need to pay ebay fees! But if you prefer then use ebay or amazon

Thanks!

Recap of a thrilling tale

Postby aloneifly on Fri Sep 28, 2007 10:01 am

A quick update - sadly Bill died a few months ago.
However, the book, Alone I Fly, is still being sold from http://www.aloneifly.com and often on ebay if you prefer. The discount price is now not applicable - sorry, but its still great value.

If you dont know already about this book please bear with me for a few moments -

My father in law, Bill Bailey was a Wellingtom bomber pilot in the Med in the campaign against Rommel. It was always his ambition to fly and after time at sea he managed to become an RAF pilot. His first posting in Egypt as a new Seargant began successfully but on the way home the plane was shot down over the desert and he was the only survivor. The book relates this mission and how he survived and goes on to tell of other missions and unusual posts where he always had to learn quickly with little direction. It truly is a great story and a very good and easy read. Everyone who has read it is complimentary of the style, writing and the content. As a family we are very proud that he we are able to introduce his writing to others and its agreat legacy from a great man.

So if I have tempted you enough to learn more and perhaps buy a copy - only £6.99 plus P&P and we will post anywhere in the world - then please visit http://www.aloneifly.com You will also be able to download a sample chapter there too.

Thanks for your time
